My Fantasy Football Draft
By Jonathan C. Mitchell on August 22, 2008

In our league format we do one draft (this is our 4th year doing the draft) and we draft for two leagues (our 2nd year doing that). We do a points league and a Head-2-Head league. We expanded to 12 teams for the first time and we do our draft based on last year’s standings with the expansion owners at the end of the draft. I finished 3rd in the points league (after winning the first two years) and 1st in the h2h but we go by the points league standing so I drafted 8th overall. We get to keep one player from our previous team as well or we can opt out of keeping and take another available player. Here is how my team wound up:

Keeper Pick: Adrian Peterson - RB (MIN)

1. Steven Jackon - RB (STL) He was best available even though he was holding out at the time.

2. Roy Williams - WR (DET) I wanted Andre Johnson but he was gone with the pick right ahead of mine.

3. Ronnie Brown - RB (MIA) Great potential in the 3rd round (4th if you count keepers) but in hindsight I should’ve gone for another WR.

4. Torry Holt - WR (STL) I was very pleased to get him here because we are a PPR league.

5. Selvin Young - RB (DEN) We only start two runningbacks but I had to take him with Brown’s injury and depth position and to block another team from getting him. I like RB depth. He gets good receptions too.

6. Chris Cooley - TE (WAS) I had him ranked 4th on my TE list and I was pleased to get him here.

7. Kevin Curtis - WR (PHI) He was McNabb’s healthy #1 reciever and I was excited I got him this late but now he is out indefinitely.

8. Brett Favre - QB (NYJ) - All the QBs went very early in this draft (6 went in the franchise keeper selection round). If he can perform as well as last year, which I think he can with the Jets recievers and new OL, then I got a good pick here.

9. Ted Ginn Jr. - WR (MIA) He should be the main target for new QB Chad Pennington. I view him as a Santana Moss type so I was pleased to have him as my 4th reciever.

10. Baltimore Ravens - DEF (BAL) The run on defensive teams was about a round before this pick and one owner took two defenses with back-to-back picks. Not bad but not great.

11. Matt Lienart - QB (ARI) A bit of a sleeper with Warner get most reps in the preseason but I think he will start and be productive as my back-up. I only need a QB for a week or two with Iron Man Favre as my starter.

12. Donnie Avery - WR (STL) We were picking at the bottom here so I went with sleepers. I think Avery will be a #3 and the Rams will throw a lot.

13. Joshua Cribbs - WR (CLE) Another flier. Before his injury (I dropped him and picked up Desean Jackson who is a starter for PHI now) I viewed him as a #3 that returns kicks. Not a bad bench guy if he gets #3 reciever reps.

14. Alex Smith - TE (TB) I needed another TE and I think he can get a lot of Red Zone looks so not a bad last pick. He is also good for one great game a year with two scores, I pray it’s the day I have him in the lineup.

We start a QB, two RB, 3 WR, a TE, a DEF, and a WR/TE flex spot. Our scoring is basic with some custom values:

Passing Yards (50 yards per point; 1 points at 300 yards)
Passing Touchdowns (6)
Interceptions (-2)
Rushing Yards (20 yards per point; 1 points at 200 yards)
Rushing Touchdowns (6)
Receptions (1)
Reception Yards (20 yards per point; 1 points at 200 yards)
Reception Touchdowns (6)
Return Touchdowns (6)
2-Point Conversions (2)
Fumbles Lost (-2)
Offensive Fumble Return TD (6)
Sack (1)
Interception (2)
Fumble Recovery (2)
Touchdown (6)
Safety (2)
Block Kick (2)
Points Allowed 0 points (10)
Points Allowed 1-6 points (7)
Points Allowed 7-13 points (4)
Points Allowed 14-20 points (1)
Points Allowed 21-27 points (0)
Points Allowed 28-34 points (-1)
Points Allowed 35+ points (-4)

We had 15 total rounds including the franchise keeper pick. We saw a huge change in draft trends with 6 QBs going in the first 11 keeper picks of our draft.

With all that said I am very pleased with my team and my RB depth.

  • John Cloutman Says:

Not a bad draft at all, I have to admit I am very skeptical of Favre. I think that while he may one of the best ever to play the game, NY is not going to be a good fit for him. Fantasy wise I think he is too much of a Int risk. Overall I think that AP and Jackson will take you a long ways and your receivers look pretty good as well because of the point per reception. Well done!!

  • Jonathan C. Mitchell Says:

Thanks John. I am a little scared to have Favre as my starter but when Brady, Manning, Palmer, Roethlisberger, Brees, and Romo were keeper picks I had no choice but to wait on a QB. I am happy I got him that late and was able to fill my other spots.

  • Gary Veduccio Says:

I did my first draft last week here is how I ended up…

    Tony Romo
    Wes Welker
    Hines Ward
    Laveranues Coles
    Brian Westbrook
    Laurence Maroney
    Antonio Gates
    Stephen Gostkowski
    Dallas

    Backups:
    Matt Forte
    Brett Favre
    Rudi Johnson
    Benjamin Watson
    Bobby Engram
    Amani Toomer

I have more drafts coming up this week

  • Jonathan C. Mitchell Says:

That’s a pretty good team Gary. I really like Dallas’ chances at being the #1 fantasy defense, kind of a sleeper pick for me. I just finished an auction draft last night. It was my first and I thought the process was fun.
