Flyers sign Mike Richards to 12-year deal
By Aaron Boynton on December 13, 2007

It’s time to wake up the hockey section here.

Today I read on NHL.com that Philadelphia signed Mike Richards to a 12 year contract extension. Richards is a 22 year old rising star and is a solid player. What is the reasoning behind such a long contract? These types of deals make no sense and then Gary Bettman wonders why the NHL continues to suffer financially. These owners are acting the same way they were before the lockout and the NHL will end up in the same predicament in the next 5-10 years.

Haha! I just posted that article and didn’t realize you had it up. Here is what I said about it:
Wow! That is a ridiculously long contract. But, I gotta say, I love it! If they truly believe he is going to be an integral part of the franchise for those 12 years then it could be a discount when it’s all said and done. I also love how the 12 year deal is for $69M while Alex Rodriguez is getting $275M over 10 years with incentives that can push it to $314M. If Richards is as good as the Flyers say then this is a heck of a deal.

Yes! Hockey talk! I think Jonathan hit it on the head. Yes, it’s ridiculous, but more so, it’s a big risk. If Richards or, the mother of long NHL contracts, Rick DiPietro get hurt in the next few years, then the contract becomes a huge mess for the salary cap. On the other hand, if the players play out the entire deal (or even 75% of it), then it becomes a real bargain. As an Islander fan, I admit I was shocked when Rick was given that deal, and I look at any physical contact he has with a much different perspective than the other 19 guys on the team. He is our franchise. He is our future. He is already underpaid. In just Year 2 of the contract, many hockey fans are starting to realize what even Marty Brodeur recently noted: Rick DiPietro is already a Top 5 goaltender in the NHL. If Rick only plays 10-12 years of this deal, it will still be a steal. Of course, that’s a big IF. Although, I’d be willing to bet that Flyer fans are seeing things the same as Isles fans now: we don’t want all our players getting this kind of deal, but our heart and soul player is a different story. Get back to us in 2017 to see if we feel the same way.
